Week Of April 2-7

Finally, spring gave us a week of enjoyable weather that allowed all 8 scheduled games to be played. Not only were these games played, but also the turnout to these events was outstanding. There were a great number of local spectators supporting the LHS athletes, and there were even many spectators from the opposing teams here in Suncrest supporting their high school athletes, traveling all the way from places like Freeman and Newport.
The week was dominated by baseball, but the LHS boys’ Soccer team played one game, losing 2-1 on Tuesday at Merkel Park against the North Central Indians.
Spotlight On Junior Varsity And Varsity Baseball
Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity baseball teams played many games over Spring Break. On Monday, LHS Varsity lost, 2-1, against the Chewelah Cougars here at LHS. On Tuesday, LHS Varsity defeated the Newport Grizzlies, 8-4, at LHS. In Tuesday’s game, Varsity starting pitcher, junior Chris Noonan, struck out the first five of Newport’s batters, all in a row.
Saturday was a big day for LHS baseball; both Junior Varsity and Varsity baseball had a double-header against one of Lakeside’s biggest rivals…The Freeman Scotties. These double headers attracted a significant number of spectators from both the Nine Mile and Freeman areas. The first game of the Junior Varsity’s double-header was a very close one, ending with a 12-11 loss for the Eagles. The Eagles JV then turned around to destroy the Scotties in the second game of the double-header, winning 13-2. Sophomore Thad Guilmet hit the ball well into the outfield and almost made it home, but was stopped at third. As if that were not impressive enough, Thad then went on to steal home.
On the other field, the Varsity baseball team won both their games; however, they were close ones, resulting in scores within three runs of each other. The first game of the double-header ended with a 6-4 win for the Eagles. The Eagles then went on to defeat the Scotties again in the second game of the double-header, winning 3-1.
While watching the Junior Varsity’s double-header, I noticed the team likes to have fun during their games. As a result of their scores, I can see they are capable of playing well and having fun at the same time. The coach, the players, and even some spectators participated in joking back and forth and sharing laughs. Making sports fun plays a big role in the success of the team. Having fun keeps the players, coach, and spectators all in a good mood, and keeps them involved, resulting in the team’s success.
