Lakeside High School Activities
Students Shine At League, District, Regional And State Competitions
Spring is in the air, though with all of our rain (and even snow) it doesn’t seem like it. However, Lakeside High School students have been busy with extra-curriculars. We have had many students compete at the state level in some of the activities/clubs offered at the school. Here is a brief rundown:
FCCLA and Skills USA– Advisor: Maureen Fanion
FCCLA has been one of the school’s most successful extra-curricular activities competing at the State , and even National, levels. The students who recently participated in State events (along with the respective competition and placings) were: Annika Paladino - Recycle Redesign (Gold); Valerie McCall – Life Event Planning (Gold); Isaac DeMaine, Keely Rosenthal, Josie LeTourneau – Hospitality Team (Silver); PJ Graese – Job Interview (Silver); and Courtney Rainville, Brittany Card, Megan Stewart – Culinary (Bronze). Special congratulations and recognition to Annika as she will be competing at Nationals in July!
Courtney Rainville qualified for the Skills USA State tournament in April. She placed third in Regionals in the Commerical Baking competition.
Destination Imagination – Advisors/Coaches: Linda St. Clair and Rich Underwood
Destination ImagiNation is a newer activity at the high school. It challenges teams of students to spend months constructing an original creative solution to a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary problem and perform/present the solution in four minutes. Having won first place at DI Eastern Regional Competition for the Coming Attractions challenge, the LHS team coached by Rich Underwood will compete at the State Destination ImagiNation Tournament on March 31. The team includes Ally Underwood, Tiffany Lawrence, Megan Ahrendt, Cassie Corker, Matt Johnston, Charlie Mitchell, and Timmy Chaney.
DECA – Advisor – David Pratt
DECA is another long-standing successful club at Lakeside. In order to qualify for DECA’s state competition, students compete in a local (called area) competition where the top eight from each event qualify. Our students did very well at area, qualifying six students to state: Gina Jeffreys finished 5th in Apparel and Accessories, Stephen Ryan finished 6th in Human Resources, Isaac DeMaine finished 7th in Business Services, Kali Rushing finished 8th in Hotel Lodging Management, Micah Humann finished 5th in Entrepreneurship Independent, and Rene Boren finished 1st in Retail Merchandising for the 3rd consecutive year. While they did not qualify for National competition, Mr. Pratt is very proud of these students for their hard work and dedication.
Math Team – Advisor/Coach: Laura Watson
The Math Team recently competed in competition as well. Regional Award Winners were: Knowdown - Adam Lemon (1st Place); Team Problem - Susie Aguirre, Mary Daniel, Jocelyn Cook-Cox (1st Place); Sofie Marikis, Katie Collins, Stephanie Marikis (2nd Place); Jimmy Spencer, Nate Yockey (3rd Place).
The State Math competition will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Those who qualified are: Knowdown – Adam Lemon; Team Problem – Nate Yockey, Jimmy Spencer, Sofie Marikis, Katie Collins, Stef Marikis, Susie Aguirre, Mary Daniel, Jocelyn Cook-Cox, Michaela Williams, Lizzy Estes, Brad Rehwaldt, Mitch Middleton, and Kelly Kyllo; Topical Team – Mitch Middleton, Kelly Kyllo, Taylor Laigo, Lindy Jacobson, Adam Lemon, Megan Ahrendt, Rachel Johnson, Amanda Allen, Cassidy Coit, and Randy Zaro.
Knowledge Bowl – Advisor: Matt Sullivan
The Knowledge Bowl team had one of the more successful campaigns in school history this season. It captured the NEA League, IEAL, and Regional championships, defeating schools of all classifications from 2B-4A. At the State Tournament, the team finished 2nd overall, representing LHS with flying colors! State competitors were: Adam Lemon, Matt Vanderlip, Justin Bodas, Jackson Holbert, Megan Ahrendt, and Katie England.
Science Club – Advisors: Teri Sardinia, Steve Olson, Brent Osborn
We had two teams of students compete at the Inland Northwest Science Bowl Competition. It was held at Whitworth University on Saturday, February 25, 2012. The students left the school at 6:45 a.m. and competed all morning in paired challenges against 54 teams. The top teams moved on to a championship bracket in the afternoon. This was a first ever appearance by Lakeside High School. We were very proud of our students and pleased with their performance even though they did not make it into the championship rounds. They have great plans to prepare for next year and will be recruiting more students to join them next year. Participating students: Brad Rehwaldt, Megan Hord, Cassidy Coit, Mitchell Middleton, Adam Lemon, Michaela Williams, Matt Vanderlip, Mitch Cupp, Trevor Wood, and Andrew Scott.
Band/Choir – Advisor: Levi Mazurek
Mr. Mazurek has done a great job with the Band and Choir program at LHS which has earned State and National awards over the past few years. This year at the Eastern Washington Music Educator’s Association Solo and Ensemble Festival, there were a total of seven (7) LHS entries: Nicole Johnston received a “2-plus” rating on Clarinet and the LHS Saxophone Trio of Valerie McCall, Jacob Whalen, and Brad Rehwaldt also received a “2-plus” rating. The following students received a “1” rating: Chase Fortner (Trumpet), Kali Rushing (Trumpet), Jackson St. Clair (Vocalist), Stephanie Brooks (Vocalist), and the LHS Woodwind Duet and Piano Accompanist (Ashley Roloff, Jordan Jensen, and Alyssa Golding).
Jackson St. Clair was also awarded 2nd Alternate and Stephanie Brooks was chosen by the EWMEA judges to represent the Northeast Region at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival.
League Academic Team
The NEA Winter All-Academic Teams were also announced. Here is a list of the winners: 1st Team (3.8-4.00 gpa) – Trevor Wood (Boys Basketball), Sofie Marikis (Girls Basketball), and Mary Spencer (Cheer); 2nd Team (3.5-3.79 gpa) – Miranda Brittos (Girls Basketball), Ashley Cook-Cox (Girls Basketball), Kirsten Kyllo (Girls Basketball), Jenna Widman (Girls Basketball), Chase Fuson (Wrestling), Josh Judd (Wrestling), and Jimmy Spencer (Wrestling).
