2012 Lakeside High School Valedictorians

Aguirre, Susie

Five Lakeside High School graduating seniors have been named “Class of 2012 Valedictorians” for their outstanding academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Each will speak during LHS’s graduation ceremony this Friday, June 8th, at the INB Performing Arts Center in downtown Spokane at 8:00 p.m.

Susan Aguirre

Susan grew up in California where she attended school through 6th grade. Her family then moved to the Nine Mile Falls area, and she has been a student of this district since then.

Susan is an active and very successful 4.0 GPA student at Lakeside. During high school, she played on the varsity soccer team all four years and the varsity tennis team for three years. She is also a member of National Honor Society and Math Club. On the academic side, she disliked history class and favored anatomy and physiology because she “loved dissecting the animals and learning all the parts and functions of the body.” Thinking back to her freshman year, her experience was “scary and unfortunate” because “nobody likes freshmen.” Throughout high school, her most amusing experience was the “abundance of balding, male teachers.” Susan gives credit to Mr. Moffatt, her 7th grade language arts teacher, for having the most impact on her academic life, saying, “He taught me where to put a comma.”

Susan is looking forward to moving on and discovering her place in life. She plans to attend Eastern Washington University but is undecided about her major. While she is unsure about a specific career, she knows she wants to work in the science or health fields. Her dream career is “something that pays well and is fulfilling.”

During her commencement speech, Susan plans to talk about the past things the Class of 2012 has enjoyed.

Anandae Clark

Anandae was born in Minnesota and lived in Hawaii for three years. She then moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, until her first year of school when she moved to Nine Mile Falls, where she remained ever since.

“Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become, and the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you, is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back... play for her.” Mia Hamm, world renowned women’s soccer player. Anyone who knows Anandae knows this quote fits her well. She is a standout athlete at Lakeside, holding many school records. She is an integral part of the track and field and gymnastics teams, as well as club gymnastics, and a member of National Honor Society. Coach Huffman, a math teacher at LHS, started Anandae in the pole-vault event, and she credits him, as well as her family, for influencing her the most. She has won four state titles, which she classifies as among her most cherished high school memories. She has twice broken the school pole-vault record, and she is the first girl in the league to pole-vault 13 feet. By comparison, Women’s Olympic gold medalists pole vault in the 15 foot range.

Anandae maintains a 4.0 GPA. She will attend Eastern Washington University this fall on an athletic scholarship for pole-vaulting. She is entering a pre-med program, with hopes of eventually obtaining a doctorate degree and working in psychiatry.

Anandae’s graduation speech will focus on the influence the Class of 2012 will have on the future.

Andrew Scott

Andrew has a passion for Lakeside not often seen. He resides in Spokane and has lived outside of the Nine Mile Falls School District his whole life, but he has chosen to stay with this district because he likes it here.

In addition to earning a 4.0 GPA while at Lakeside, Andrew participated in the Science Bowl and is a member of both the Associated Student Body (ASB) and the Washington Drug-Free Youth programs. While a part of the ASB, his peers elected him Junior Class Vice-President during his junior year and Senior Class President this school year. According to Andrew, being class president, as well as earning the academic title of valedictorian, has been his most rewarding high school experience. On the other hand, his toughest high school moment was taking three Advanced Placement tests in a single week.

All this hard work and dedication through the best and worst moments have led him to a bright future. He plans to attend Eastern Washington University to pursue a bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science and a minor in math. He hopes to eventually land a job as a computer programmer/software engineer.

Andrew gives credit to his mom for his success, saying, “She works harder every single day than anybody I know, all to make sure my sisters and I can live a decent life.”

This Friday, Andrew will give his commencement speech, advising students to “Work harder! Put your heart and soul into what you want to achieve.”

Matthew Vanderlip

Matt was born and raised in California and lived in Japan for a year before moving to Suncrest in 2002.

Matt has had a very successful four years at Lakeside, graduating with a GPA of 4.0. He is a member of National Honor Society, Science Club, Destination Imagination, Knowledge Bowl, Worship Group, Washington Aerospace Scholars, Associated Student Body, and the tennis team. As a part of the tennis team, Matt grew to admire his tennis coaches, Sean and Aimee Macosky, for their time and dedication to the team.

Matt feels his toughest part of high school (for him and definitely many others) was “2009-2010… a difficult year in general, especially with the passing of Kaylene.” (For those who do not know, Kaylene Palaniuk attended LHS with this 2012 graduating class and was fatally injured in a car accident. She is very loved and missed by all, especially her family and friends, as well as this graduating class).

“Mr. Sullivan helped me the most when it came to note taking strategies, writing essays, and preparing for Advanced Placement exams,” Matt said about the teacher who made the most impact on his academic life.

Matt plans on attending the Moody Bible Institute in Spokane, with a major in either Biblical Studies or Missionary Aviation Technology. He eventually wants to be a part of a vocational ministry. “Let your relationship with Christ dictate your life,” is Matt’s favorite quote.

Matt’s commencement speech will focus on world events that have transpired during the past four years.

Michaela Vincent-Williams

Michaela has successfully completed her high-school career without any regrets and has set herself up for a positive, rewarding future. She has attended the Nine Mile Falls School District since kindergarten. She was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and moved to Spokane when she was almost five years old.

“Pay attention in class. If you want something, do your best to achieve it,” Michaela advises students looking to get better grades. With a solid 4.0 GPA, it looks like she listened to her own advice. During the last four years, she was on the varsity soccer team, and was a member of the Science Bowl, the Math Club and National Honor Society. Like most freshman, she was nervous starting high school but after her nerves settled, she was a very successful student. She ended up meeting her best friends while at Lakeside and shared many amusing experiences with them.

According to Michaela, her toughest high school experience was “having to decide what I would do next year.” However, now she has her future all planned out. She will be moving on from the Lakeside Eagles to the Eastern Washington Eagles to pursue a biology degree. She is undecided on a career, but is possibly considering a job in the medical field.

Michaela’s speech will advise students to “Keep your goal in mind throughout the year, not just at the end of the semester before grades come out.”

Congratulations To All Graduates!

With their high school successes behind them and the world in front of them, the Outpost staff would like to congratulate these five valedictorians, as well as the entire Class of 2012 for their achievements.
