Riverside State Park Foundation Hosts Open House This Sunday, June 24th

Something For Everyone During This Family Fun Event

Save Sunday, June 24th, for a day of outdoor fun with friends and family, sampling all the recreational opportunities offered at Riverside State Park. The annual Open House, “Discover Riverside State Park,” opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. with five special venues: the Bowl and Pitcher, Nine Mile Recreation Area, Equestrian Area, the Spokane House Interpretive Center, and ORV Area. No matter what you enjoy, Riverside State Park has got it, and “Discover Riverside State Park” is the event where you find it all in one day!

The Bowl and Pitcher

The Bowl and Pitcher will have children’s activities, games, and crafts at the picnic shelter as well as exhibitors, hikes, bike rides, orienteering, and wildlife presentations. Climb the new staircase on the west end of the Swinging Bridge and access the nearly endless hiking opportunities along the river and up to stunning views of the Park and surrounding area. The Bowl and Pitcher is located on the northwest side of Spokane. Take TJ Meenach down the hill and turn west onto the Aubrey L White Parkway to the Bowl and Pitcher, or take Nine Mile Rd. and turn left on Rifle Club Rd. From Rifle Club Rd ., turn left on Aubrey L. White Parkway and follow it to the Bowl and Pitcher.

Nine Mile Recreation Area

Nine Mile Recreation Area, formerly known as Nine Mile Resort, will have canoes and kayaks along with paddles and safety gear, that normally rent for around $25 available for free during the open house. Meet and greet your local water and boating experts. Get your boat inspected for free. Learn about Lake Spokane and what you can do to protect water quality before you take your boat out for a spin. Learn about upcoming changes and additions to water access, camping, and recreation in Riverside State Park. Take Nine Mile Rd ., SR 291 from Francis to Nine Mile Falls. Turn on to Charles Rd. and go through town. Watch for signs to the entrance into the Nine Mile Recreation Area on the right.

Equestrian Area

It makes horse sense to visit the Equestrian Area at the “Discover Riverside State Park” event. Have a look at the brand new campground for campers with horses (or not) at the Equestrian Area. Saddle up and take a free trail ride. Take the kids for a free pony ride. Or just come enjoy the folks and exhibits. The Equestrian Area is easy to get to from Government Way. From Ft. Wright Dr. turn right on Government Way and head north to the Aubrey L. White Parkway. Turn right and watch for signs to the Equestrian Area where you’ll find plenty of parking and trails galore.

The Spokane House Interpretive Center

How about a little culture and history? The Spokane House Interpretive Center offers an indoor and outdoor museum experience for young and not so young learners with artifacts, exhibits, and demonstrations. Learn how the early Fur Traders interacted with the Natives and walk in their footsteps for a day around the site of the historic encampment. From Francis take Nine Mile Rd. to Nine Mile Falls; the Spokane House is just around the bend from the Dam on the left. History lives at the Spokane House!

The Off Road Vehicle Area

And now for something completely different! The Off Road Vehicle Area (ORV) is the only state operated facility of its kind. Even if you don’t have an all terrain rig, come take a test drive for free, or ride along with an expert off roader. Check out the latest off road gear on display. Take Nine Mile Rd. to Seven Mile Rd. and turn left. Proceed about three miles up the hill and turn left on Inland Rd. Go south on Inland Rd. to the ORV parking area on the left. All ORV activities are free during the open house with your Discover Pass.
