Up Close & Personal: Farrell’s Bar & Grill

Community Invited To Open House On July 7

Looking for some good food with a friendly atmosphere? Then drop into Farrell’s Bar & Grill in the Plaza at Suncrest. Farrell’s has been open under their current ownership for the past six months. With the encouragement of many locals, the Etchart family purchased the business from Tom and Ellie Farrell when they decided to close. Glenn Etchart, the head chef and patriarch of the family, has been in the restaurant business for the past 26 years. They previously owned another local business, The Hideaway Restaurant in Tum Tum.

The Etchart family has lived in the Nine Mile Community for the past 18 years. Glenn was a medic in the Army for 10 years before being discharged and finding himself able to pursue his passion for cooking. While living in Colorado, he started as a chef at the Plaza Club of the Rockies and then went on to the Ritz Grill and Zeb’s Roadhouse. After moving to Washington State, he worked at the Siam Palace in Grand Coulee, WA, as the first Caucasian ever hired to cook there. He then bought his first restaurant, Bubba’s Almira Steakhouse. Moving to the Nine Mile community prompted him to open the Hideaway Restaurant in Tum Tum. Upon its closing, he was asked to help open the Ram Big Horn Brewery in Spokane. After a 13 year stint in construction, he was plagued with injuries and decided to return to his love of food. He was hired to help open Sabellos restaurant in the Suncrest area and was then hired by Tom and Ellie Farrell when they opened the original Farrell’s. When Tom and Ellie decided to move away from the restaurant business, Glenn and Sheryl decided they would like to delve back into the idea of restaurant ownership. This time it has become a family affair, with Sheryl and their daughter Jessica as co-owners.

Though not the jobs in which they have made a living with previously, Sheryl and Jessica have jumped right in. Sheryl has been a dental assistant since 1978 and Jessica is a licensed veterinary assistant and former dog groomer. Upon entering the establishment you will see Jessica’s friendly, smiling face waiting to greet you and make sure you are comfortable. Sheryl is there most evenings after her day-job is finished. They have hired about ten employees to help fill out the shifts, but for the most part Glenn and Jessica are the mainstays.

Farrell’s offers many regular specials including their $5.00 lunch special daily, their lunch club cards, Steak & Bake Friday, Ribs and Thirsty Lady Thursday and Bacon Wednesday. They have also started featuring live music on Thursday evenings with local artist Stanton Cobbs. Breakfast is now served everyday. The Outpost staff has sampled many of their specials and find them to be excellent, especially when accompanied by the friendly service.

Another thing that makes Farrell’s standout is that most of their foods are made from scratch. This includes all of their salad dressings and condiments excluding their 1000 Island dressing and, of course, ketchup and mustard. Their homemade tarter and ranch dressing are very popular. When possible, Glenn likes to feature local fare in his cooking. His barbecue sauce comes from Fletcher’s, a local family that has been making their special sauce for years. He slices his own steaks and cuts his own fries. These small steps make a huge difference in the finished product.

Farrell’s can take care of any catering needs as well. They are happy to accommodate large parties for luncheons, meetings, large dinner parties and special occasions. They are also able to provide box lunches for off-site meetings and gatherings. Maybe a dessert assortment for that special occasion or event in your home would be a nice option. If you can dream it, they can serve it almost anywhere.

Farrell’s would like to invite the community to their open house on July 7. They will be having food and drink specials all day and will be providing balloons for all of the children. If you are looking for somewhere to take the family for a nice, local meal stop by and experience the family-friendly atmosphere at Farrell’s. The Etchart family looks forward to meeting you.
