HOW TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN, TEENAGERS, VULNERABLE ADULTS AND ADULTS
Adults provide children with basic needs that includes shelter, food and clothing, however, the adults responsibility does not stop there. Limit the child’s access to the internet as predators can lure your child into situations that they cannot handle. Make sure that the child is in a safe environment when they are not in your care and limit one-on-one contact as a child is vulnerable and may be afraid to tell someone if an adult or playmate abuses them. Always listen to your child as they seldom lie about sexual abuse. You may call Child Protective Services at 1-800-557-9671 to report child abuse.
TEENS: Adults should always be willing to listen to their teenagers, plan activities and make sure there is a parent available when your teenager goes to a friend’s home. Set rules for using the Internet, Facebook, and caution the teenager to be careful about using their personal information when they are on the Internet. Teenagers want to fit in and have to deal with peer pressure, consequently they may do things they normally would not do. Not all teenagers come from a stable environment and they may make wrong choices or they may feel that they have no other options. There are adults who lure these teenagers into prostitution, trafficking, alcohol and drugs.
VULNERABLE ADULTS: There are family members or caregivers who take advantage of the elderly. The caretakers may physically abuse the elderly, take control of their finances, limit their meals or refuse to get medical treatment for them. The elderly person may not report the abuse out of fear that the relative or caretaker will no longer be able to care for them or they don’t want the relative to get into trouble. You may call Adult Protective Services at (509) 685-5644 or 1-800-459-0421 to report elderly abuse.
ADULTS: The adults are responsible for taking care of children, teenagers and vulnerable adults but they must also take care of themselves. This time of year is a good time for getting bids from contractors to make improvements inside and outside of the home. Do your homework: Use the Internet to check comments from people who have had repairs or remodeling jobs, ask friends or neighbors if they recommend anyone, get several bids from contractors that you are considering and ask them if they are licensed and bonded.
Adults must also monitor their credit reports. Protect yourself from ID theft by never giving your social security number to anyone but your employer, bank or medical information. If someone calls you about a great deal and they want money right away, don’t send them a cent. If the deal sounds too good to be true, back away. There is no free lunch.
Some adults also deal with sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking, however, there is help for all of the above.
